How is scheduling done in Cloud Composer?
Scheduling in Cloud Composer, which is Google Cloud’s managed service for Apache Airflow, is done using Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) that define the order and dependencies of tasks. Each DAG is associated with a schedule interval, defined using either cron expressions or Airflow’s built-in presets (like @daily, @hourly, etc.). This schedule tells the Airflow scheduler when to trigger the DAG execution.
When a DAG is deployed to Composer, the Airflow Scheduler continuously parses the DAG files and checks if a new run is due based on the start_date and the schedule_interval. Once the time arrives, the scheduler creates a DAG run and places the individual tasks into the task queue. These tasks are then picked up by workers (running in Kubernetes pods) and executed accordingly.
Cloud Composer also supports catchup, which controls whether the scheduler should backfill runs that were missed during downtime. Disabling catchup can help avoid unnecessary historical runs. To manage complex scheduling patterns, users can utilize standard cron syntax such as 0 6 * * 1-5 (to run at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday).
